PIER 39, on the waterfront at Embarcadero and Beach Street (& 415/ 981-8030), is a 41 2-acre waterfront complex, a few blocks east of Fisherman s Wharf. Ostensibly a re-creation of an early-20th-century street scene, it features walkways of aged and weathered wood salvaged from demolished piers. But don t expect a slice of old-time maritime life.
