
The 1890 Eureka still carries a cargo of nostalgia for San Franciscans. It was the last of 50 paddle-wheeled ferries that regularly plied the bay; it made its final trip in 1957. Restored to its original splendor, the side-wheeler is loaded with deck cargo, including antique cars and trucks.

PIER 39, on the waterfront at Embarcadero and Beach Street (& 415/ 981-8030), is a 41 2-acre waterfront complex, a few blocks east of Fisherman s Wharf. Ostensibly a re-creation of an early-20th-century street scene, it features walkways of aged and weathered wood salvaged from demolished piers. But don t expect a slice of old-time maritime life. This is the busiest mall of the group, with more than 100 touristy stores. In addition, there are 20 or so restaurants and snack outlets, some with good views of the bay.
